CivMixer Spotlight: Paul Martin

From framed prints featuring the iconic Nipper to mugs with notable landmarks from Capital Region cities, many individuals have seen the work of Paul Martin. Paul’s company, known simply as PhD Design, has gift products that can be found at various locations, from Lark Street Mercantile in Albany to Jay St. Collective in Schenectady, along with Artique at Crossgates, Vendor Square at Colonie Center, and Her Love Collections in Troy. Let’s find out a little bit more about the person behind PhD Design.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became interested in art and photography.

A: I began expressing my artistic talent as a child. Throughout my education, I focused on illustration, photography and graphic design. I graduated from Montclair State University in New Jersey, with a dual major: graphic design & photojournalism.

Q: You have many different designs, but there seems to be a strong focus on highlighting landmarks and iconic features in the Capital Region cities of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy. What attracted you to those types of designs?

A: I have a strong passion for architecture. The Capital District boosts some of the most magnificent buildings, landmarks, and historic icons locally. Nipper, the NYS Capitol, and The Palace being at the top of the list.

Q: Do you have a favorite design or product? If so, why does that one stand out?

A: Nipper B&W Lineart 18×24 poster and light blue sky cartoon designs are my favorite. They are my most popular and best sellers in all of the local stores. Also, I think the design is fun yet classic. All my customers seem to really gravitate to the simplicity of the design.

Q: What advice do you have for people who might be interested in getting involved in photography or graphic design?

A: I would say follow your passion and dream big. The sky is the limit!

Q: What are three things that you love about Albany and/or the Capital Region?

A: I love the artistic vibe in Albany, architecture, and ease getting around the area. You can be downtown in only a few minute drive.
