As a mom, I’ve got some thoughts about what moms might appreciate receiving for Mother’s Day. I’ll give you a hint – it probably isn’t an appliance. This Sunday I’ll be celebrating my 26th Mother’s Day. If you couple all this experience with my years of being a child and honoring my own mother, I’ve got some knowledge I’m more than happy to share with you.

Keep a few things in mind as Sunday approaches – in my opinion, most moms aren’t looking for elaborate or expensive gifts. A simple acknowledgement of all the ways you appreciate your mother, be it in a note or card, generally will more than suffice and be cherished.

If you’re tight on funds, think about doing something to lighten Mom’s load. Take on one of her usual tasks like walking the dog first thing in the morning so she can sleep in or maybe sweep the deck off or assist with planting some pots of annuals to help get it ready for the season.*

It really is the little things in life that count – at least around my house.

If you’re feeling flush or want to do something more elaborate, read on because I’ve got some other ideas for you to consider.

  • The Times Union put together a comprehensive list of gift ideas, including dining suggestions, culled from their annual Reader’s Poll of favorites here.
  • Lark Hall’s monthly Market is Sunday, ⅝, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The event, featuring makers, vendors, musical performances, and brunch beverages from the bar, promises something for everyone.
  • Brunch, of course, is a thing on Mother’s Day and we’re fortunate to have many eateries from which to select. If you’re hoping to enjoy a late morning or early afternoon meal out with Mom, I’d suggest you make your reservations now! If you get shut out of your first choice, ask them for a recommendation. They might be hip to something you’re not. Here are couple of brunch spots that sound particularly appealing to me: Frog Alley Brewing Company – (Schenectady) complete with music and Mom’s first drink. Mother’s Day Slay at Margarita City (Colonie) Jazz Brunch at the Bearsville Theater (Woodstock)
  • Mom prefers something a little more active? Maybe an organized run fundraiser in Saratoga State Park would be fun for her – and the littles. Yoga more her speed? Free yoga classes will be happening on both Saturday and Sunday in Washington Park courtesy of The Hot Yoga Spot. Multiple sessions will be held, including moms, kids and family classes. Pre-Register here.
  • Take her away! Mother’s Day sightseeing cruises, with two afternoon sailing options, on the Dutch Apple.
  • Or – maybe let her get away alone, or with friends, with a gift card for a local movie theater like the Landmark (Spectrum) or the Madison.
  • Wash her car – or give her a gift card to help her keep her Mom Taxi looking good .
  • Can’t leave the house? Check out the Virtual Tulip Fest from the Mohonk Mountain House.
  • Speaking of Tulip Fests…Albany’s OG spring festival is this weekend and the weather looks to be lovely. Find all you need to know about this annual event here.

One last thought regarding Mother’s Day – keep in mind that not everyone has their mom present in the lives. Be sensitive to those who may have lost their mothers, be it to estrangement or other circumstances. A hug and a smile might be the very best gift in these situations.

*Could someone please forward these suggestions to my three sons?
