Now that it’s actually autumn I’m open to indulging in some of the season’s delights. I don’t know about you, but I have no tolerance for rushing through the seasons in the manner that retailers and advertisers encourage, preferring to at least make an attempt to live in the moment.
Crisp air, hot cider donuts and beautiful foliage are a few of my favorite things and I was happy to welcome the autumn equinox earlier this week. If you, too, are in the mood to welcome fall’s very first weekend here are five local things to do. Unpack those sweaters and boots, my fashionista friends, and get out there!
Last night the 48th Annual Adirondack Balloon Festival opened with a scheduled block party in Glens Falls. The festivities continue all weekend and include balloon flights, live music and other fun activities. Details are here. If you’re looking for a bite to eat in Glens Falls, there are some great options, including Radici Kitchen and Morgan & Co.
This weekend my alma mater hosts the 4th Annual Albany Book Festival. A joint NYS Writers Institute and UAlbany initiative, this event offers two days of literary delights – all at no charge. Grab your favorite mask (required for all attendees and participants regardless of vaccination status) and go. If you’re lucky, you might even spot local legend and Institute founder, William Kennedy.
Sunday brings the Upper Madison Street Fair to Albany’s Pine Hills neighborhood. Featuring local arts and crafts, food, music, a used book sale and children’s activities, this is a fun family event that you won’t want to miss.
Speaking of crafts, perhaps you’re looking forward to winter nights by the fire and creating your own textiles from locally sourced supplies. If so, don’t miss this weekend’s Adirondack Wool and Arts Festival. Located at the Washington County Fairgrounds, this event offers two days of demonstrations, (including sheep herding!), craft beverages, vendor booths and a silent auction.
If you’re feeling more inclined to settle in on your own couch there are new seasons streaming of some favorite television programs including HBO’s Succession, Apple TV’s Ted Lasso and The Morning Show and Netflix’s Sex Education. Pro tip on that last one – don’t watch the season premiere with the kids unless you’re looking to provide them with a graduate level course. You’ve been warned.
