Rosanna’s Italian in Albany’s Center Square finally opens after 15 months of restorative preservation, renovation

Rosanna’s, located at 23 Dove Street in Albany, marks today as its opening day. Formerly Bongiorno’s Restaurant, a neighborhood restaurant that held a loyal following for over 40 years, the building was closed for 15 months of intensive restoration and renovation.
Given today is Women’s Equality Day, today’s opening has a special meaning for this historic property.
Rosanna’s, named as a tribute to longtime owners Rosanna and Felice Bongiorno, is housed in a building with impressive historic ties to the women’s suffrage movement. Built in 1844-45, the building most notably housed the Coley sisters, who opened a school for young ladies and children. Under their tenure, the building also served as a meeting space for the Albany Women’s Suffrage Society and the Women’s Christian Temperance Movement.
This legacy lives on with female co-owner Brianne Baggetta, who is also the President & CEO of The Mailworks, an Albany-based print and direct mail company. Baggetta’s vision to create a beautiful space for the community to gather has endured many setbacks, particularly in response to complications created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re thrilled to finally announce the opening of Rosanna’s after so many challenges and obstacles. This is so much more than a restaurant to me; it’s the physical manifestation of months and months of hard work from our incredible team. It was the inspiration from Rosanna Bongiorno and the many women who came before her in this building that kept us going despite the state of our community and the world right now,” said Baggetta.
Baggetta and co-owner Timothy Dillon are also the proprietors of Dove + Deer, a restaurant that is located across the street from Rosanna’s and has been embraced by the community for its upscale pub fare and stylish interiors. Baggetta and Dillon hope to recreate this success at Rosanna’s, where Moriah Dohner, previously with Jack’s Oyster House in Albany, will manage front-of-house while Chef Rich Torino will oversee kitchen operations.
