That Patio Life

Public Service Announcement: It’s not too late to get outside and do as much patio eating and drinking as possible.

In fact, now is arguably the perfect time to steal a few moments in the last remaining days of good weather as possible, lingering over a beverage (adult or otherwise) and a tasty plate of something-or-other.

There will be a time come winter, (it’s right around the corner, folks), when you will think lovingly back to this time of year and wonder why you ate any meals inside at all. Why on earth did you waste any opportunities to experience that amazing and inexplicable alchemy of how fresh air makes everything taste better?

To help you make up for lost time, I’ve compiled a list of area eateries and places to drink that have an outdoor option.

The list is very Albany-focused, because, well, I live here and most of my patio time is in my fair city. But I’ve included a few of my favorite places outside of Albany, too. There are even more great places that aren’t listed. If you have a favorite, please share it so we can add it to the list!

I could probably write an exhaustive tome about many patios, but there is a magic to a select number of seasonal spaces that is worth highlighting.

Lyon’s Lake Restaurant is one of my favorites. Lyon’s Lake is a private lake in Rensselaer County and it feels like the bar/ restaurant that all of the locals go to in an 1980’s movie. Like the townie bar in Dirty Dancing, only a million times better.

It appears that they haven’t changed anything for 40 years in a really good way. There’s a large space with a bar, seating, a stage, and a pool table. Dock seating over the small lake. The food is reliably delicious. The staff is kind. They have a band every Sunday, paint and sips, comedy nights, and the sunsets are stunning.

No listing of local outdoor spaces to eat and drink would be complete without June Farms, which, if you haven’t been there, is a gentleman’s farm with a seasonal bar/light eatery in their Pony Barn.

If Lyon’s Lake is a throwback to the best of what was, June Farms is the best of what is.

Cocktails with the freshest of everything, many of the ingredients from the farm itself, in the beautiful, comfortable, perfectly decorated, shabby chic Pony Barn. Time just seems to pause as you take in the landscape and animals, and even more importantly, to enjoy the company of the people you’re with.

If you are there and don’t want to leave, you can even rent one of their cabins. And while you can now throw axes in other places around the region, June Farms was the first local site to offer that particular activity.

Somehow these seasonal spaces encourage you to put down your phone and be in the moment, which is everything I love about spending quality time outside. Get out there while you can and make memories you can refer back to for mental and emotional sustenance when that cold wind starts to blow.
